For the past year, I have been working with a fairly new programming language -- Javascript. My past work experience exposed me to Java (of which I'm still trying to get to know) so I am still new with Javascript. It's common misconception that these two languages are somehow the same, but I'm telling you otherwise. Working with Javascript gave me lots of surprises and shocks because it's logic is very different with that of Java.

* not all variables need to be declared
This one is a very basic syntax in Java, but Javascript does not follow it! You can just use variables out of the blue. The catch: those undeclared variables are stored in the global memory of the web browser and may use up unnecessary space. This site actually mentions this, with additional information on the best practices in Javascript.

* confusing logic: if (variable)
In Java, 0 = false, 1 = true. In Javascript null = false, not null = true. See example below.


With this logic, value of testStr is 'hindi'.

* -1=='-1' is true in Javascript
In JS, as long as the content is the same, even if the type is different, it's considered as equal.

These are just a few of the scenarios wherein Java and Javascript differ. Maybe I could list some more of the discoveries that I will make in the future.

I just have to say, I need to review my Java soon. I somehow miss programming with it.

I have been coding in Java since college, and I have been using Eclipse IDE since I started working. I don't know why I did not start using this when I was studying though (I was only using Notepad++ back then) because it is a very powerful tool for developing not just Java but also other languages like Javascript and C++. Through the years, I got to know the environment enough to know its brilliant features. 




Below are some of the most useful shortcuts that I use everyday when I code on Eclipse.

CTRL + SHIFT + P ~ navigate between scoping curly braces

ALT + arrow left OR arrow right ~ jump to previous cursor positions

 CTRL + H ~ find all instances of 

CTRL + ALT + H ~ find all calling methods

CTRL + ALT + R ~ find resource 

CTRL + spacebar ~ display template proposals 

This list is just the tip of a huge iceberg. I'll update this once I recall the rest of it. :D

I've been programming professionally in the Java Programming language for the past three years, but still there are aspects of my work that seems unfamiliar to me. I would be listing down below some concepts that I wanted to learn more about this OOP language (and if I mentioned something wrong, please do correct me!).

• The purpose of implementing IClusterable and Serializable interfaces in Model objects (and even in forms)

We declare them Serializable because we want to keep the values of these variables in Forms as long as the session is alive. In some web pages when you press the Back button of the browser, the values that you input in the form is still there. What Serializable does is that it saves the values in a compressed file (I'm just not sure where this file is located) and the page just accesses it once the form is loaded again.
