EnviroPop: Save Endangered Animals with a Swipe of Your Hands [☝]

March 19, 2013

There are already thousands (or maybe millions?) of games out there for smartphones, but only a few remarkable ones exist for a cause. What's cooler than being able to have fun playing a game and at the same time help out in saving Mother Nature?

There's this one particular app that allows you to do just that. You have fun while helping out save endangered animals! App Labs Digital Studios Inc. has partnered with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to bring you

It's a puzzle game application wherein the goal is to rescue endangered animals from various sea hazards.

The Game
There is this 8x6 grid with icons of animals and sea hazards. The goal of the game is to eliminate three or more of those sea hazards within one minute. The more hazards you eliminate, the higher the score you would earn.

The Endangered Animals
The application features animals that are close to our heart - buntanding, pawikan, and dugong, just some of the endangered species in our country.

To get to know them all better, here are the animals that you must look out to save in the game:

Chi-chi the Panda

Chi-chi is a Giant Panda, which is one endangered species that has symbolized the organization of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) ever since.

Gary the Grouper

Gary is a Leopard Coral Grouper. This species has been in danger due to unsustainable fishing practices. WWF is helping the Live Reef Food Fish (LRFF) trade so that these fish can still roam and swim around coral reefs in the country.

Bobby the Butanding

Bobby is a Butanding. Dubbed as Earth's largest fish, the Butanding which is also known as Whale Shark grows bigger than a passenger bus and weighs heavier than six adult elephants! It eats tons of planktons with its five-foot mouth and 2mm long teeth. This huge fish is totally harmless to humans. It is one of the top species that WWF protects in its habitat in Donsol and in other parts of the Philippines.

Dolly the Dolphin

Dolly is a Spinner Dolphin. This kind of dolphin is well-known for its ability to do crazy jumps, spins and leaps. The Philippine law deems dolphin killing illegal and WWF prioritizes the conservation of these cetaceans.

 Doogie the Dugong

Doogie is a Dugong. This animal inhabits the Indo-Pacific wherever seagrass is abundant. Herds of this animal had once thrived the country's archipelago and even became the source of that mermaid folklore. Unfortunately, hunting and habitat degradation reduced their population in the long run and has now become an endangered species.

Pattie the Pawikan

Pattie is a Green Sea Turtle. This kind of turtle can be found throughout the Philippines. It feeds purely on algae and seagrass, making it the only herbivorous marine turtle. The seagrass grow densier when pruned and the pawikan helps it to spread along the seafloor.

Clara the Clown Fish

Clara is a Clown Fish. She's from the same species as Nemo of that popular Disney movie. These fish inhabit the warm waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. They form a mutual symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. Anemones' mucous coatings serve as protection to the fish. However, these white-orange striped fish mostly end up in aquariums that's why they are included in the list of animals needed to be protected.

The Sea Hazards

These are the enemies that should be defeated in this game (and in real life actually). Cyanide, Dynamite, Trawl Net, Oil, and Pet Bottles are some of the factors why sea animals die. By all means the use of illegal types of fishing and the spread of water pollutants should be stopped so that marine life will be conserved.

Other Features
Enviropop also has an Enviropedia where you can read more about marine life and the dangers that currently face their survival today. The app also lets you play competitively with your friends as your scores and achievements can be shared over at Facebook and Twiter.

The Cause
EnviroPop is available in iOS for only $0.99 (~Php40.00). Android release is still on the works and will be available soon! Proceeds from purchases of the full version will go to the marine conservation programs of WWF in the Philippines.

It looks like a nice game to play. Although I haven't really played this (I am waiting for the Android release! :D), I would love to try it for myself! I think the one-minute limit would surely be not enough for this game. Plus in top of all the fun, you also contribute in your own little way to help protect these animals! :D
