Movie Review: Painted Skin II - The Resurrection [☝]

January 18, 2014

I saw this movie being played in the bus on my way to work one day. It was perfect timing because it was just the beginning of the film. I dunno what pulled me into this movie - the effects, the atmosphere maybe? I just found myself fully absorbed watching the movie that I had to unwillingly snap myself out of it because well I already have to get off the bus.

I was so curious about the story that I had to find it and watch it on my own. And you know what, I am so glad I did.

I love how this movie is loaded with so much girl power! The main characters are such strong and beautiful women, and not to mention great actors too! The emotions are all in the eyes. It was powerful. The despair, the longing, and the aching are all there.

To give you a brief background of the story, it's about a fox demon (left in above image) who is seeking a human heart to break the spell of the ice imprisonment that she escaped from, and a princess (right) who longs for the affection of one of her generals but feels ashamed of her scarred face.

These two ladies meet and discover that they both would benefit each other if they exchange bodies. The fox demon would become human, and the princess will be a fox demon, but with a flawless face.

They agreed to permanently exchange bodies to fulfill each of their heart's desires. Along the journey, they learn what is truly important, and they hold on to the true happiness that it gives to them. I don't want to give much details on the plot, so you just have to watch it yourself!

This was a well-received movie in China, making it the country's fourth highest grossing local film of all time. I have not seen the first movie of which this is a sequel of, but I had no problem catching up with the story. Painted Skin II has its own drama, which is loosely dependent on the first movie.

This movie is such a sweet escape from reality. I love the story, the characters, the costumes, the special effects, and the overall feel of the movie. I would have loved to watch it again and again, but I just find some of the scenes a little creepy (especially the "exchange of bodies" ceremony).

Painted Skin II is not a love story for me, but a tale of a journey filled with sacrifices towards getting your heart's utmost desires at all costs.
