Book Reads: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (Marie Kondo)

December 03, 2017

This is one of the books that I bought from the recently concluded Manila International Book Fair. I've only known about this book through the Reddit community - it's one of the most top recommended "books to read before you die". I got interested so I added this title to my to-read shelf on my Goodreads account. Came book fair day, I searched for this book and fortunately it was available in one of the stores there.

I am always into organizing stuff, and I'd say reading this book enlightened me more of the tidying process that can be applied to someone's life. I finished reading it in a month and then with high enthusiasm, tried to apply it on my own life.

Lessons Application
This is a self-help book, and of course you'll only really learn the lessons taught if you apply them into your life. The one space I am most in control of in our house is, of course, my room. Most of the items that I have in my desk drawers have all been decluttered through the years (apparently I have been applying some of the rules being taught in the book all my life). One of the most challenging parts on the other hand - were my closet.

Yup, this is me.
I don't have much, but still I realized that I don't really wear all of them. So applying the KonMari method, I started to dissect my closet and removed those items that I didn't really like wearing. Surprisingly, there were several of them.

This is how my closet looked like after the sorting:

I know the choices got way slimmer but at least I know each of those items in my closet are those that I love to wear. In the coming months to come, I would later realize that I needed to buy more clothes. I would then have a different way of choosing the clothes that I would add to my collection - something that makes me feel good, and something that I would be able to wear comfortably.

Same goes to the rest of the miscellaneous items that I have lying around my room. Would you believe I still have my plane tickets from my US trip in 2015 and other receipts from my trips abroad? Like what was I expecting to do with them someday? 😅

I collected similar items around the room and placed them in paper bags at the door of my room. I think I was able to collect 3 paper bags of random papers and cartons, etc. I never knew I had that amount of litter lying around my room!

The decluttering aftermath
After an exhaustive day of rummaging around the room, the atmosphere indeed felt lighter - not just physically but emotionally. I actually applied the techniques at my office desk, and sure enough my workspace felt a lot brighter and lighter.

My wish is to apply the KonMari method to the rest of the areas of the house. God knows how much unused/not needed stuff we have lying around the house for years. Well I still have to negotiate stuff with my parents because they are clingy with things. 😅

Thanks again to this book. If you've been wanting to organize your life, then this book will do great wonders to you, maybe better than it did for me. So grab a copy, and experience the wonders of decluttering!
