Here are some of the ways that you can protect yourself on the web.

Use online tools to filter and do checkups on websites visited. There are lots of this available online. Some trusted ones are
  • opendns - can be used to filter websites by content, protect network against phishing sites and malware
  • Qualys BrowserCheck - checks your internet browsers for suspicious plug-ins and add-ons
  • Secunia - gives additional security to network by doing vulnerability assessments.

Change default passwords of accounts (i.e. wifi modem). This should be a standard operating procedure, not just online but in other things like ATM cards.

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when using public wifi. I don't really know how VPN works (this is my homework!). I connect to public wifis most of the time, especially when in the mall, to check various sites online. With a public wifi, security can be compromised. Setting up a VPN is one way to protect your information even within a public network.

These are just a few of ways to protect yourself online. There are still several methods out there that can be added to the list. At the end of the day, the sole goal is to protect yourself from unwanted people getting your information. So always be cautious when doing things online.
